Last weekend, our community came together and showed support in an impactful way.
On Friday, August 7th, we officially opened the doors of The FUDGE Foundation Community Center with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. It was a moment years in the making that started with an idea to build a safe space for a community that has been ignored and underserved for far too long.
The ceremony honored the memory of Derrick Fudge, who was taken from us in the 2019 Oregon District mass shooting. Derrick was the father of our founder, Dion Green, and his presence was felt throughout the afternoon. As the ribbon was cut and the guests welcomed into the Center, we were reminded that this space is much more than a building. It is a tribute to a man whose legacy continues to inspire this work, and a commitment to the community he loved.
We were humbled to see so many familiar faces and appreciated the turnout from community members, supporters, and partners who have been part of this journey. The Center now stands as a resource for healing, connection, and support, as well as a testament to our ability to turn pain into purpose, as Mr. Green is famous for saying.
The following day, Saturday, August 8th, we gathered again for the 7th Anniversary Community Peace & Love Day Block Party. The event served as both a remembrance of those lost, as well as a celebration of the community’s ongoing resilience and commitment.
We shared free food, enjoyed the various face-paint designs, and admired the creativity on display at the car show. School supplies and giveaways helped families prepare for the year ahead, and the performances by T.R.S.S Drum Corp and LuvLocks Experiment brought the crowd to life. We were honored to be joined by Dayton Mayor Shenise Turner-Sloss, whose presence underscored the importance of this work at every level of our city.
The block party was a reminder that while we carry grief, we also carry hope. And that hope is best shared in community.
We’re grateful to everyone who attended either event and to those who continue to support the Foundation’s work. The Community Resource Center is now open, and we look forward to the programs and services it will offer in the coming months.
